The Dialogue and Culture Organization, in collaboration with the Sulaymaniyah Branch of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, held an open discussion with representatives of TV channels, media professionals, and university professors. The event, titled “Television in the Face of the Threat of Social Media,” was attended by members of the Iraqi Parliament, the Kurdistan Parliament, the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Council, and the General Directorate of Culture.
During the discussion, participants addressed the challenges faced by television media and the threats posed by social media. The session began with an overview of these issues, followed by contributions and suggestions from the attendees aimed at improving the state of television media in the Kurdistan Region.
For instance, it was highlighted that, in the past, television was the primary medium for conveying news and information. However, social media has now largely taken over this role, leading to a decline in television viewership. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the reliability of social media as a source of news, with participants emphasizing that much of the information shared on these platforms is not trustworthy.
At the conclusion of the event, the insights and recommendations provided by the participants were compiled. These will be drafted into a proposal and submitted to the Kurdistan Parliament for consideration.
